The county issues both certified and non-certified copies of death certificates. Certified copies cost $20 each and carry the county seal for legal use. Non-certified copies also cost $20 but do not contain the Social Security number of the deceased. For genealogy name searches, the fee is $5 per name. Uncertified hard copy requests cost $10. Personal checks are not accepted. Bring cash, a money order, or another accepted payment form. Staff can advise on current accepted payment methods when you call.
Starting January 6, 2026, the St. Joseph County Health Department began issuing out-of-county death certificates in addition to local records.
